When you have over 65,000 NSFW subreddits in a single directory, organization becomes critical. A flat, alphabetical list would be unusable. That's why NSFWSubs.com uses a hierarchical category tree β a multi-level system that lets you start broad and drill down into exactly the niche you're looking for.
Here's how it works.
The Category Hierarchy
Our category system works like folders on a computer. Each subreddit is assigned to one or more categories, and categories can have subcategories within them. The structure looks like this:
- Top-level category (broad topic)
- Subcategory (narrower focus)
- Sub-subcategory (specific niche)
- Subcategory (narrower focus)
For example, you might navigate from a broad body type category, into a specific feature, then into a particular niche within that feature. Each level narrows the focus.
How Categories Are Assigned
Every subreddit in our directory goes through a categorization process based on:
- The subreddit's own description β What the community says about itself
- Content focus β What type of content the community is centered around
- Community rules β What the moderators define as on-topic
- Existing tags and flairs β How the community self-identifies
This means categorization reflects what the community actually is, not just what it might seem like from the name alone. A subreddit called "GoneWild" isn't just tagged as "wild" β it's properly categorized under amateur self-posting communities.
Browsing Categories on NSFWSubs.com
The Sidebar
On desktop, you'll see a sidebar on the left with the full category tree. Click any top-level category to expand it and see its subcategories. Click a subcategory to navigate to its listing page with all the subreddits within it.
On mobile, tap the grid icon in the bottom-left corner to open the category sidebar as a slide-out panel.
Category Pages
Every category has its own dedicated page at /category/{category-slug}. On a category page, you'll see:
- Category name and description β What this category covers
- Subreddit count β How many active subreddits are in this category
- Subcategory links β Quick links to browse narrower niches within this category
- Subreddit grid β All subreddits in the category, with the same sort and filter controls as the homepage
Breadcrumb Navigation
When you're deep in the category tree, breadcrumbs at the top of the page show you exactly where you are. You can click any level in the breadcrumb to jump back up the hierarchy. For example:
Home > Body > Female > Petite
Click "Female" to see all female-focused subs, or "Body" to see the broader body type category.
How Categories Help You Discover Content
The biggest advantage of a category system over a flat list is discovery by context. Here's how to use it effectively:
Start Broad, Go Narrow
If you know roughly what you're interested in but not specific subreddit names, start with a top-level category. Browse the subreddits listed there, then check the subcategories for more focused options. Each level deeper gets more specific.
Explore Adjacent Categories
When you find a category you like, look at its sibling categories β other subcategories at the same level. These cover related but different niches. If you enjoy one subcategory, there's a good chance a sibling category has content you'll like too.
Combine Categories with Filters
Categories work alongside our other discovery tools:
- Sort by Trending within a category to find its fastest-growing subs
- Filter by subscriber count to find either the biggest or smallest communities in a niche
- Use orientation filtering to narrow results further
Check Subreddit Detail Pages
When you click into a specific subreddit, you'll see its category breadcrumb showing where it sits in the hierarchy. You'll also see similar subreddit recommendations β communities that share content overlap, which may span multiple categories.
How Many Categories Are There?
Our category tree contains hundreds of categories and subcategories covering the full spectrum of NSFW content on Reddit. The tree is continuously updated as new subreddits are added and content trends evolve.
Categories range from broad topics with thousands of subreddits to highly specific niches with just a handful. Both are useful β broad categories for general browsing, specific ones for finding exactly what you want.
Categories vs. Search vs. Sorting
Each discovery method on NSFWSubs.com serves a different purpose:
| Method | Best For | |--------|----------| | Categories | Browsing when you know the general topic but not specific names | | Search | Finding a specific subreddit by name or keyword | | Top sort | Seeing the most popular communities overall or within a category | | Trending sort | Discovering fast-growing communities before they go mainstream | | Newest sort | Finding recently added communities | | Subscriber filter | Narrowing by community size | | Location search | Finding geo-specific communities |
The most effective approach is to combine methods. For example: browse into a category, sort by trending, filter to small communities. You'll find hidden gems that no flat list could surface.
