Reddit is home to thousands of NSFW communities, but the platform itself doesn't make them easy to find. NSFW subreddits don't appear in Reddit's default search results, they're excluded from r/all by default, and there's no built-in directory to browse them. So how do you actually discover new ones?
Here are the best methods, from least effective to most.
Method 1: Reddit's Own Search (Limited)
You can search Reddit directly, but it's frustrating for NSFW content:
- Reddit filters NSFW results unless you've enabled "Show NSFW content" in your account settings
- Search results mix posts and communities together, making it hard to find subreddits specifically
- There's no way to sort subreddits by subscriber count, trending status, or category
- You need to know what you're looking for β no browsing or discovery
Verdict: Works if you already know the exact name. Useless for discovery.
Method 2: Ask on r/NSFW411
The subreddit r/NSFW411 is a community where users ask "Is there a subreddit for X?" and other members respond with suggestions. It's genuinely helpful, but has limitations:
- You have to wait for someone to reply
- Responses depend on what other users know β they might miss niche communities
- The subreddit's wiki has a list, but it's manually maintained and often outdated
- No search, filtering, or sorting β just a text list
Verdict: Good for specific questions, but not a browsing or discovery tool.
Method 3: Curated Lists and Directories
Several websites maintain lists of NSFW subreddits. These range from blog posts with 50-100 hand-picked subs to larger directories. The problem with most of them:
- Small scope β Most list only a few hundred subreddits out of tens of thousands
- Stale data β Lists are manually updated, so banned subs stay listed and subscriber counts are months old
- No filtering β Just a flat list with no way to sort, search, or filter
Verdict: Better than nothing, but you're limited to whatever the author decided to include.
Method 4: Use NSFWSubs.com (Recommended)
This is why we built NSFWSubs.com. It addresses every limitation above:
Browse 65,000+ Subreddits by Category
Every NSFW subreddit in our directory is assigned to a hierarchical category tree. Instead of scrolling a flat list, you can drill down from broad topics to specific niches using the sidebar navigation. Want amateur content? Click the category. Want specifically amateur Asian content? Click the subcategory.
Search by Name or Description
Our search bar provides instant fuzzy-matched results as you type. It searches across both subreddit names and descriptions, so you can find communities even if you don't know the exact name. Searching for "yoga" will find r/YogaPants, r/YogaHotwife, and related subs.
Sort by Top, Trending, or Newest
- Top shows the largest communities by subscriber count β the proven, popular subs
- Trending reveals subreddits with the fastest recent growth β great for discovering up-and-coming communities before they go mainstream
- Newest lists subs added in the last 30 days β fresh communities you won't find on older lists
Filter by Subscriber Count
Not everyone wants the same thing. Some prefer massive, highly active subs. Others want small, focused communities. The subscriber range filter lets you dial in exactly the community size you prefer β from under 1K members to over 1M.
Find Subs by Location
This is unique to NSFWSubs.com. Enter a city, region, or country to find NSFW subreddits tied to that geographic area. Looking for your local community? We've got you covered.
Filter by Orientation
Set your preference filter to straight, gay, lesbian, or bi, and the directory shows only relevant communities. No scrolling past content that doesn't interest you.
Discover Similar Subreddits
Every subreddit detail page includes a "Similar Subreddits" section with recommendations for related communities. Found one sub you love? Discover a dozen more like it.
Tips for Finding Hidden Gems
Even with the best tools, here are some extra tips:
-
Sort by Trending β The trending sort surfaces small subs gaining subscribers quickly. These are often the best discoveries because they haven't been listed everywhere yet.
-
Explore subcategories β Don't stop at top-level categories. The deeper you go in the category tree, the more niche and specific the communities get.
-
Use the subscriber filter for small subs β Set the filter to "under 5K" or "under 10K" to find communities that fly under the radar. Smaller subs often have tighter communities and more original content.
-
Check "Similar Subreddits" β When you find a sub you like, always check its detail page for similar recommendations. This is the best way to fall down a rabbit hole of related content.
-
Bookmark as you go β Use our private bookmarking feature to save subs as you browse. No account needed, everything stays in your browser.
